(jd) Attentive witnesses were driving on the B239 at around 2.40 am on Tuesday (26.11.) when they saw a completely demolished car just before the junction with Füllenbruchstraße. There were no people on or in the car at the time. The witnesses immediately made an emergency call. The officers who arrived determined that the previously unknown driver was driving his Kia in the direction of Herford and then lost control of his car around 300 meters before the junction with Füllenbruchstraße. It first crashed into the crash barrier on the left-hand side and became wedged in it, causing various wheel and rim parts to come loose from the car. The car then skidded about 40 meters further into a treetop and finally came to rest another 25 meters down an embankment. As there must have been two people in the car based on various traces and it could not be ruled out that they had suffered serious injuries in the accident, the officers immediately launched a manhunt for the driver and front passenger. A helicopter and a dog handler were also requested for this purpose. A bus driver contacted the police a short time later because he had seen a person who appeared to be heavily intoxicated and injured: In the area of Wellbrocker Weg/Ramker Weg, the officers then came across a 19-year-old from Bad Salzuflen who had various injuries corresponding to the accident scene and showed clear signs of alcohol consumption. A voluntary breath test at the police station in Herford was clearly positive, so the public prosecutor's office ordered blood samples to be taken. The 19-year-old is not in possession of a valid driver's license. He made contradictory statements about who was driving the car at the time of the accident and gave the officers the personal details of a second person. This was an 18-year-old from Bad Salzuflen. The investigation into who was driving the car at the time of the accident is still ongoing. According to research in the police systems, the Kia, which had suffered damage in the five-figure range, had already been reported stolen by its owner a few days earlier. The Herford traffic commissioner's office has taken over the further investigation. The B239 remained closed until the early hours of the morning for the duration of the accident investigation.
