(jd) The employee of a supermarket on Deichkamp street noticed a man placing various items of clothing and spirits in his rucksack yesterday (March 5) at around 9.00 am. He then handed this over to another man, who then tried to pass through the checkout area. This man was approached by the employee, whereupon he dropped the rucksack with the unpaid goods and fled. The employee then managed to approach the unknown man who had stowed the goods in the rucksack. Until the arrival of the police officers who had been called, the stranger was aggressive towards the employee and finally attacked him violently. The man, a 36-year-old with no fixed abode, continued to insult the employee while the police officers were taking stock of the situation. The 36-year-old has already made several police appearances and was taken into custody in Herford. Witnesses who can provide information about the second person or the facts of the case are asked to contact Herford police on 05221/8880.
