The resident of an apartment building on Fidelenstraße contacted the Herford police on Thursday afternoon (16.8.) to say that he had been the victim of a theft. The 78-year-old senior citizen was in his home at around 2.15 p.m. when two previously unknown male persons rang the doorbell. The strangers pretended to be employees of a construction company who allegedly had to check the water quality.
The senior citizen let the two men into the apartment and, under false pretenses, the strangers managed to distract the residents in the bathroom. During the conversation with one of the perpetrators, the second suspect managed to look around the apartment and take a shoulder bag. When the injured party thought the situation was strange and wanted to leave the bathroom, both men fled from the apartment. They left the stolen bag behind in the stairwell.
One of the men is described as being about 45-50 years old and about 180cm tall. He was wearing dark overalls and a cap at the time of the crime. The second person could only be described by the senior citizen as wearing a light brown jacket.
The criminal investigation department has started the investigation and is asking witnesses who noticed the two men and can provide information about them to call 05221-8880.
