(hd) Last Saturday (31.08.), an initially unknown driver damaged a parked blue VW Polo while maneuvering his car in the parking lot of a supermarket in Kirchlengern. The driver got out of his BMW and looked at the damage to the Polo. However, he then got back into the car and drove off. He then drove away from the scene of the accident without permission and without initiating the settlement of the claim. The injured party, who noticed the damage to his vehicle at around 09:00 in the morning, immediately informed the police. While the police were recording the accident, the person responsible for the accident appeared on the scene again. He explained that he had temporarily left the scene of the accident due to an appointment. In this context, the Herford police remind drivers of the correct behavior in the event of traffic accidents in connection with stationary traffic: After damage has occurred, the person responsible for the accident is initially obliged to wait at the scene of the accident - the same applies to supposedly minor damage. If settlement of the claim cannot be initiated after a reasonable waiting period, the police must be informed. Otherwise, the suspicion of a criminal hit-and-run offense may arise. In this case, the Herford traffic commissioner's office is now investigating.
