(hd) On Thursday (20.03.2025), witnesses became aware of smoke developing in a wooded area on Baukamp in Bünde at around 16:10 and alerted the fire department and police. The emergency services searched the area and discovered that a tree standing at the edge of the forest was on fire. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading. It was noticeable that the fire had apparently developed in a hollow in the trunk. Based on the overall circumstances, it is suspected that unknown persons deliberately or negligently set the tree on fire. The damage caused is estimated to be at least 1000 euros. The police have opened a corresponding investigation. Any further witnesses who can provide information on the matter are asked to call 05221 / 888-0.
Even though spring has only just begun, there is already an increased risk of forest fires in some parts of North Rhine-Westphalia. Due to the low rainfall, the forest floors are often dry. Visitors to the forest should therefore be particularly careful. Barbecues, smoking and open fires are prohibited in the forest. In the event of recognizable smoke development or even flames in a wood, an emergency call should be made immediately.
